Congratulations to all Ironman Arizona Participants

Just wanted to say congratulations to our good friend James Nguyen from OneTri.com for finishing Ironman Arizona this past week (a little delayed forgot to click publish). We also wanted to congratulate everybody else who made it to the start line and did their best.

We hope everybody has been getting all their wish list items this holiday season. We are all grateful that we have the opportunity to participate in the great sport of triathlon.

Giro Advantage 2 Aero Helmet Sale

Here’s an awesome find for our deals section.

I’ve seen this Giro helmet on sale before but not at this price! It might be a typo so go get one right away. Get one of the best-selling aero helmets in history. It looks like the Advantage 2 is on sale only for a limited time so go grab one before they are all gone. This is a great helmet for triathlon, time trials, or Halloween parties.

If you’ve been waiting for the cheapest price, big deal, special price, or coupon wait no longer. Google it you’ll see the price is the lowest around. I’m pretty sure this won’t last.

Here’s what the site says about the helmet:
“… The Giro Advantage 2 Time Trial TT Aero Bike Helmet is shaped with input from the worlds fastest riders over 23 years. The choice of elite professionals like Alberto Contador, Levi Leipheimer, David Millar and Alejandro Velverde. The Advantage 2 represents the pinnacle of aerodynamic performance, fit and ventilation. Simply put, it’s what the world’s best riders wear when every thousandth of a second counts…”

Giro Advantage 2 on sale, there’s also a video review of the product on the site. I’ve embedded it here:

Tri Shorts Guide

Do I need tri shorts? What tri shorts should I get? As a beginner you might have asked one of these questions. Here’s a list of tri short considerations and guides.

Why Tri Shorts? – Most coaches that I’ve run into in the past have all said if you buy one thing triathlon specific then it should be a pair of tri shorts. I agree as it’s likely the most important thing that sticks with you throughout the race. I think it’s important to get a comfortable good quality pair of tri shorts. This doesn’t mean you have to buy the most expensive pair but I wouldn’t skimp in this area. There are plenty of good tri shorts at around $60.

Considerations: There are a lot of things to consider when buying tri shorts. I’ll try to list all of them here:

  • Length – Inseam length is a common consideration for people mainly because of comfort in the past 6″ shorts were the most popular. Nowadays 9″ and longer are more common. The most important thing here is to get something you are comfortable with.
  • Pad – A good pad is a common desire of people who know their tri shorts. The most popular tri pads are the ones that have a little bit extra padding but not so much that it adversely affects the swimming and running portion of your race and training. You will generally pay a little more for these pads. Traditionally tri pads are a black, very thin, quick wicking, synthetic sponge like material. The newer pads are usually differentiated by being a different color, generally red. The best way to tell what will work for you is to just feel the difference. All pads are not created equally.
  • Pockets – Some tri shorts offer 1 or more pockets to store small items like a gel packet. In one case it’s a nice feature to have if you want a gel in your pants. On the other hand you may not really need pockets if you have a race belt and pouch on your bike. Again this is a preference thing. A lot of people like the pockets. I don’t really use my tri short pockets. I tend to use my jersey pockets.
  • Compression – This is a very popular consideration nowadays. People are leaning towards the benefits of compression and even buying compression tri shorts. There’s a lot to learn about compression so I’ll leave that for another time.
  • Material – Tri shorts are made out of all types of materials. It’s an impossible balance to make a short sturdy, comfortable, fast, fast wicking, cheap, cool, and warm when you need it. Just know that you won’t be able to find an all-in-one-tri-short-that-does-everything. The best you can do is focus on comfort an in the long run you’ll be happy.
  • Price – I already touched on this but I don’t think it’s a good idea to skimp here. You will be in your shorts for a long period of time. There is a lot of motion going on down there in the swim, bike, and run. A number of reputable brands have good tri shorts around $60 you can probably spend a little more to get something with a few more extras.

Zoot Ultra Speed 2011 Update

I love my 2010 Zoot Ultra Speed shoes because they are so light and comfortable. They are the easiest shoe’s I’ve ever owned to put on, which is especially helpful in a tri and when I’m in a rush to get out on a run. The 2010 are black and yellow. The new 2011 Zoot Ultra Speeds that just came out are a classic blue and yellow with a silver shiny accent. The color palette is much louder than the previous year.

You can find out more and purchase the 2011 Zoot Ultra Speed by Clicking Here

Zoot Ultra Kalani and Kane Run Shoe 2010

I am a fan of Zoot Shoes. The Kalani is my 4th pair of Zoot shoes and I have to say that I love this shoe. Ideally this shoe should be used as a high mileage trainer. However for me it has been more pratical to wear them every day and run in them as well. There will be a lot of people who say that I’m killing my shoes, I agree. However I can’t help it because these are likely the most comfortable shoes I’ve had next to the Zoot Ultra Speeds. The upper on these shoes is so soft and comfortable, it’s like wearing a sock. The only reason I’m wearing these every day instead of the Zoot Ultra Speed is because the Speeds are racing flats and they will wear out much more quickly.  I’ve probably only done about 50-80 miles of running in these shoes so far and have to say that I love them. I’m pretty sure I’ve walked over 200 miles in them.

The only difference between the Kane (grey) and Kalani (blue) beside the color is the sole. The Kane is designed to be a stability high mileage trainer and the Kalani is designed to be a high mileage neutral trainer. To find out more just click on the following links to be taken to OneTri.com for the specs:

Kalani (click here) – There is another video of the Kalani on this link.

Kane (click here) – There is another video of the Kane on this link.

Here’s a 360 degree video of my Kalani on my feet. I think they’ve held up pretty well for what I’ve put them through.:

Intro – GearReviewer

la triathlon scott plasma with zipp 404 clinchers

I’m a recreational triathlete if there is such a thing. When I started doing triathlon many years ago I spent a lot of time planning and training. Nowadays I don’t have as much time as I have kids and a larger volume of work. I’ll try to squeeze in a triathlon here and there because I don’t want to lose touch. My work is in the field of selling triathlon equipment so you can say it’s part of my job to stay up to date. I can assure you that today my knowledge of equipment far surpasses my knowledge of training and racing. So if you have questions or comments about triathlon gear I’m hoping that this blog resource will be helpful. Please let me and my compadres know when we’re being helpful and also not helpful. I make no promise to be perfect. I only promise to TRY and be helpful.  I tend to write about products that we are seeing at work. So if it at times it seems like I’m peddling it’s probably because I am. It’s my job so consciously or unconsciously it’s happening to some degree or another.

Side note: I’ve been blogging on and off using my blogger account for the last few years. Just recently my cousin convinced me to try out WordPress so I’m giving it a shot. So far I’m liking what I see.
